Tips to Aid Independent Living
Here are a few very simple, no-cost or low-cost practical tips to help make the home a little safer that our experienced team of Access Auditors have come up with. These tips can help plan for the changing needs that growing older brings. They can also help make the home safer for all the family. Here are a few to start us off:
- Fitting a letter box cage inside the front door can help avoid the need to bend to pick up letters.
- Make sure stairs are well lit – good visibility can reduce the risk of tripping or falling.
- Badly fitted or fraying carpets can cause trip hazards.
- Single-lever mixer taps with a swivel arm are easy for most people to use. If they are positioned carefully behind or to the side of the sink, they can be used to fill kettles and pans on the work surface, rather than having to fill them in the sink and then lift them out.
- Whether the kitchen is used for just preparing food or also for eating, try to find space for a stool or chair. Some people may need to sit and rest at regular intervals.
